Lizle Louw (BCom (Law), LLB, ICL Programme (Antwerp), Conveyancer)

Editor-in-Chief of Fleet Street Publications’ Labour Law for Managers Loose Leaf Service. Lizle was admitted as an attorney of the High Court in March 2002 and has more than 10 years of experience in employment law.

She obtained a B Comm (Law) and LLB degrees at the University of Johannesburg and also attended the University of Antwerp as an exchange student where she completed a certificate course in International Criminal Law. Whilst studying at the University of Antwerp, she completed a thesis on discrimination in the employment environment. Lizle is also a conveyancer.

Lizle advises large mining and retail companies and assists her clients in relation to all employment related matters including the drafting of employment contracts, the drafting and implementation of policies and procedures, retrenchments, all internal hearings (including disciplinary hearings, appeal hearings, poor performance counselling and issues relating to ill health or injury), CCMA arbitrations, private arbitrations, Labour Court and Labour Appeal Court litigation.  Lizle also drafts contracts of employment, contractor agreements and settlement agreements.  She regularly advises on section 197 transfers.

Lizle also provides clients with advice in relation to all employment law legislation including the Labour Relations Act, the Basic Conditions of Employment Act and the Employment Equity Act.

 


Susan Stelzner (BA, LLB)


Susan was a practising attorney, partner and head of the employment law department of Edward Nathan Sonnenbergs

Susan’s expertise was: retrenchments, restructuring, tailoring policies and contracts to suit the business, preventive advice on all aspects of employment law, discrimination and advice on collective/strategic labour and IR issues.

Susan had 20 years’ experience in advising mainly corporate, but also individual clients in all aspects of industrial relations and employment law. She had acted as a Judge in the Labour Court on a number of occasions since 1999 and was an experienced arbitrator and mediator.

She had also appeared for clients in cases in the CCMA, the Labour Court and in arbitrations.

Ivan Israelstam (BA Hons., Adv Dip (IPM))

lvan lsraelstam has a BA honours degree from The University of the Witwatersrand and an lPM diploma in Personnel Management and Training. He has a career spanning 21 years in labour law and industrial relations, which he began in corporate HR management. Starting out as a generalist, he developed his expertise with a focus on industrial relations, training, participative management and organisational change. He is renowned as a leading authority on pragmatic labour relations management and speaks regularly on television and radio.

Ivan is currently on SACOB’s Labour Affairs Committee, and is therefore on the cutting edge of business’s decision making on labour issues. He is co-author of the book Making Workplace Forums Work and is a regular conference speaker on subjects including labour law, affirmative action, union negotiations, conflict management and Workplace Forums.

He writes a weekly column for The Star newspaper and contributes to several other labour law and industrial relations publications. Ivan's combination of labour relations experience and journalistic expertise provides the reader with a wealth of practical labour law and industrial relations knowledge, communicated in a user-friendly style.
 

Barney Jordaan (BA LLB (cum laude) and Doctorate in Law (LLD))

Barney Jordaan holds a BA LLB (cum laude) and Doctorate in Law (LLD) from Stellenbosch University and was admitted as an attorney of the Supreme Court in 1982. He was professor of law at Stellenbosch University until 1997, when he left the university to practice full-time as a labour law and industrial relations specialist. He is still an extraordinary professor at the university’s Graduate School of Business where he teaches on the MBA, management development and industrial relations programmes.

Barney serves on the arbitration, mediation and training panels of Tokiso Dispute Settlement and is a senior arbitrator on the panels of a number of bargaining councils. He has gained wide experience in the fields of conflict management and dispute resolution. He was a part-time Senior Commissioner of the CCMA until December 1999 and currently serves on the conciliation and arbitration panels of a number of bargaining councils. He is a well-known author on labour law.

 

Anton Steenkamp (BA, LLM, LLM (Pret), LLM (summa cum laude) (Notre Dame, USA)

Anton holds an LLB degree from the University of Stellenbosch, an LLM from the University of Pretoria and an LLM (summa cum laude) from the University of Notre Dame (USA). He practices in Cape Town and has 18 years of experience in all aspects of labour and employment law, including collective issues, restructuring, pension law, discrimination and employment equity issues, occupational health and safety and the preparation of all types of employment contracts, policies and procedures. He has a substantial litigation practice acting on behalf of employers, as well as trade unions and individual employees, predominantly appearing in his own matters, in the Labour Court, the Labour Appeal Court, the CCMA and arbitrations. He also has extensive mediation, facilitation and relationship building skills. He has specialised experience and expertise in dealing with the unique employment arrangements and issues specific to the public sector, from restructuring government departments and municipalities to privatising and transferring state-owned enterprises. Anton has published extensively in the field of employment law, has lectured to the Labour Law LLM courses at various universities, and has presented at conferences, seminars and training courses. Anton has acted as a judge in the Labour Court, is on the Tokiso arbitration panel and is a past national president of the South African Society for Labour Law.
